RM of Lake Johnston’s story

The Rural Municipality of Lake Johnston No. 102 incorporated as a rural municipality on December 9, 1912. It lies in the southwest part of Saskatchewan, north of Assiniboia and south of Moose Jaw.

Over the years several villages within its boundaries came and went. Expanse was dissolved as a village on January 1, 1935, and Mitchellton followed on January 1, 1939. Ardill was dissolved as a village on December 31, 1972. Bishopric and Dunkirk remain as localities, and the town of Mossbank, where the RM's office is located, is surrounded by the municipality.

Today the area is known for two nearby conservation areas, the Old Wives Lake Bird Sanctuary and the Isle of Bays Wildlife Refuge, which lie 16 and 10 kilometres north of Expanse.
